Hematopoiesis refers to the set of physiological mechanisms involved in the production of blood cells or components.

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are the starting point of this hematopoiesis process.

They ensure the permanent production of all the different blood cell lines, allowing them to be constantly renewed. The hematopoietic stem cells can differentiate into myeloid and lymphoid precursors.


Hematopoietic stem cells are not identifiable by their morphology, but they are defined by several surface markers, such as CD34 or CD133. These different phenotypic markers are used for the identification and purification of the HSC population.

In adults, hematopoiesis takes place in the bone marrow, where hematopoietic stem cells establish the effective hematopoietic niche; they are also presents in the peripheric blood, but in smaller quantities.


Hematopoietic stem cells can also be of fetal origin, they are localized in umbilical cord blood, or placental blood. This alternative cellular source has the advantage of low immunogenicity, linked to the immaturity of the fetal immune system.


By their multipotency, their graft, their cytokines sensibility and their origin characteristic, hematopoietic stem cells are studied and are the subject of research in different fields as cancerology, cell therapy, aging, immunology...

Vascular Biology

The study of Vascular Biology is one of the pillars of our activity. Extensive subject with several applications, endothelial cells play different roles thus conferring the endothelium the status of dynamic and multifunctional organ.

Tissue Regeneration

Tissue regeneration represents a major challenge in terms of both scientific knowledge and medical advances. The regeneration process is possible in particular thanks to mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), which combine stemness and support functions.


Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent. They also can differentiate into a wide variety of cell types and have the ability to self-renew. The aim of many studies is to better understand the mechanisms of tissue regeneration, and in particular the role of these mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). Several studies show that the ability and the diversity of mesenchymal stem cell differentiation are different according to the origin of the tissue they are extracted from.


In view of their characteristics, MSC are tools with multiple applications, as regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, immunomodulation, or as research topics in development, stem cells...
